The main Wisconsin college grant is the Wisconsin Grant, a need-based award from the state’s Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB) for residents at University of Wisconsin campuses, Wisconsin technical colleges, tribal colleges and private nonprofit Wisconsin colleges. Your award is calculated from your FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) using a published formula for your type of school; for 2026-27 the maximum is $3,700 at UW campuses and $4,850 at private nonprofit colleges. The FAFSA is the only application.
Because HEAB publishes the formula itself, you can estimate your award with simple arithmetic once you know your SAI. This guide shows you how.
Who is eligible for Wisconsin state aid
According to HEAB’s program page, to receive Wisconsin state aid you must:
- Be a resident of Wisconsin.
- Hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree or certificate program.
- Attend a nonprofit college or university based in Wisconsin.
Need-based programs are determined from FAFSA data. HEAB also notes that students on the state’s Child Support Lien Docket are generally ineligible unless they have an approved payment plan.
Wisconsin Grant formulas for 2026-27
HEAB uses a separate formula for each sector. Each one subtracts your SAI from a fixed number and multiplies the result by a percentage, up to a maximum.
| Sector | 2026-27 formula | Maximum award | Additional tier (if funds are available) |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Wisconsin (WG-UW) | ($9,250 – SAI) x 40% | $3,700 | SAI $6,751 to $10,000: $1,000 |
| Technical College (WG-TC) | ($9,270 – SAI) x 18.9% | $1,752 | SAI $6,693 to $8,000: $500 |
| Tribal (WG-TR) | ($7,000 – SAI) x 35.00% | $2,450 | None listed |
| Private Nonprofit (WG-PNP) | No formula listed; maximum award to SAI of $8,000 | $4,850 | Tier 5, SAI 14,001 to 16,000: $1,000 |

Working through the UW formula
The formula is the published method, so you can apply it yourself. A student with an SAI of 0 gets ($9,250 – 0) x 40%, which reaches the $3,700 maximum. As SAI rises, the result shrinks, and above the formula range a student may still qualify for the $1,000 tier-2 award if HEAB has funds left. A negative SAI does not raise the award above the maximum. Your college’s aid office calculates the actual figure; treat your own math as an estimate.
“If funds are available” matters
The tier awards are paid only when the sector has money left after formula awards. Wisconsin Grant funds are limited, so students who file late are the ones most likely to miss the extra tiers. Filing the FAFSA early is the most reliable way to protect them.
Wisconsin Grant rules for UW, technical and tribal schools
- Need and enrollment: awards depend on financial need and enrollment.
- Time limit: “Eligibility cannot exceed ten semesters.”
- Part-time students: you can receive the grant at least part time, including less than half time, with the award prorated.
| Enrollment level | Credits |
|---|---|
| Full time | 12 or more |
| Three-quarter time | 9 to 11 |
| Half time | 6 to 8 |
| Less than half time | 5 or fewer |

How to apply for the Wisconsin Grant
- File the FAFSA. HEAB uses it as the application. Our guide on how to fill out the FAFSA walks through every section.
- List your Wisconsin college so HEAB and the school receive your information.
- Find your SAI on your FAFSA Submission Summary, then apply the formula for your sector to estimate your award. Our guide to the Student Aid Index explains what the number means.
- File again every year. The grant is recalculated annually from your new SAI.
HEAB’s program page does not list a single statewide filing deadline. Your college may set a priority date for its own aid, and our FAFSA deadlines guide explains why those dates matter.
How the Wisconsin Grant fits with federal aid
The Wisconsin Grant is packaged with the Federal Pell Grant, and both are driven by your SAI, so students who qualify for one often qualify for the other. For award years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, a student whose non-federal aid equals or exceeds the cost of attendance is not eligible for Pell, according to a June 4, 2026 Federal Student Aid electronic announcement. With a Wisconsin Grant maximum of a few thousand dollars, that limit is unlikely to apply unless you also hold large outside scholarships.
Wisconsin Grant checklist
- Confirm Wisconsin residency and enrollment at a Wisconsin nonprofit college.
- File the FAFSA as early as possible each year.
- Find your SAI and estimate your award with your sector’s formula.
- Plan your credit load; part-time awards are prorated.
- Track your semesters; the limit is ten.
- Resolve any child support lien issue before you file.
Questions families ask about the Wisconsin Grant
Can I estimate my award before I file?
Only roughly. The formula needs your SAI, which you get after filing the FAFSA. The Federal Student Aid Estimator on StudentAid.gov can give you an estimated SAI first; plug that into your sector’s formula for a ballpark figure.
Why is the technical college maximum lower than the UW maximum?
HEAB sets a separate formula and maximum for each sector. HEAB does not explain the difference on its formula page, so treat each sector’s numbers as separate programs rather than comparing them. The table above shows the 2026-27 numbers side by side.
Does the grant follow me if I transfer?
Your eligibility does, as long as you stay at a Wisconsin nonprofit college and within the ten-semester limit, but the award is recalculated with the new sector’s formula. A student moving from a technical college to a UW campus, for example, moves to the UW formula and maximum.
Do semesters at less than half time count toward the ten?
HEAB’s page states the ten-semester limit without breaking it down by enrollment level. Ask your aid office how your past semesters have been counted if you are close to the limit.
I attend a private nonprofit college. Which numbers apply?
The Wisconsin Grant for private nonprofit institutions (WG-PNP) is a separate program. For 2026-27, HEAB lists a maximum award of $4,850 and a maximum SAI of $8,000 to receive that maximum, plus an additional tier 5 award of $1,000 for SAIs from 14,001 to 16,000 if funds are available. HEAB does not publish a formula for this sector on the same page, so ask your college’s aid office how your award is calculated.
What is the Child Support Lien Docket rule?
HEAB says students on the state’s Child Support Lien Docket are generally ineligible for state aid unless they have an approved payment plan. If this applies to you, contact the child support agency to set up a plan before you file, so your grant is not held up.
