Illinois College Grants: MAP Grant Guide for 2027-28

Illinois college grants center on the Monetary Award Program (MAP), a need-based grant for Illinois residents attending approved Illinois colleges, with a listed maximum of $8,400 for full-time students. MAP is run by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), and you apply simply by filing the FAFSA or Illinois’s Alternative Application. The catch is timing: MAP money is limited, and in 2026 ISAC stopped announcing awards for students who applied after late April.

The agency is the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Its website refused automated requests when this guide was checked, so the details below come from the financial aid offices of two Illinois universities that administer MAP, each named where its information is used. The federal 2027-28 FAFSA opened on September 23, 2026, according to CNBC.

Illinois college grants: who qualifies for MAP

“Eligibility for MAP is based on financial need, not high school grades or test scores,” according to the University of Illinois Chicago Office of Student Financial Aid. UIC lists these requirements:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be an Illinois resident
  • Be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen, or meet the criteria for the state’s alternative application
  • Enroll in at least 3 credit hours per term in a degree or certificate program at an approved Illinois college
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Not already hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Not have used the equivalent of 135 MAP Paid Credit Hours

Loyola University Chicago adds that students need a Student Aid Index (SAI) at or below the program limit, which it lists as 9,000 for 2026-27, according to Loyola’s MAP page. The SAI limit is set by ISAC each year, so check the 2027-28 figure with your college.

How much MAP pays

MAP award What the college aid offices say
Listed maximum “$8,400 for the 2023-24 and subsequent academic years” (UIC); “$8,400 for full-time enrollment (15 credit hours per term)” for 2026-27 (Loyola)
Part-time students Prorated for fewer than 15 credit hours per term (Loyola)
Actual cap The lowest of the maximum, ISAC’s tuition and fee limit for your college, or your calculated need (UIC)
Overall limit Total MAP cannot exceed your cost of attendance (UIC)

In other words, $8,400 is a ceiling, not a typical award. A student at a lower-cost college, or one with less need, will receive less. We could not read ISAC’s own 2026-27 formula page, so we have not listed any adjusted or reduced maximum here; your college’s aid offer will show your real MAP amount.

Why filing early matters so much in Illinois

MAP is funded by a yearly state appropriation, and when applications exceed it, ISAC stops making new awards. For 2026-27, UIC reports that ISAC suspended award announcements:

  • Students whose first FAFSA or alternative application was received on or before April 23, 2026 received a full-year award announcement.
  • Students whose first application was received on April 24, 2026 or later had their announcement suspended.

A suspended announcement is not a guaranteed award. It means you wait to see whether funding allows more grants. Loyola’s advice is direct: “It is to your advantage to apply as early as possible as funding is limited.” For 2027-28, there is no reason to wait. The FAFSA is open now, and the cutoff date for the coming year will not be known until ISAC announces it. Our FAFSA deadlines guide explains why “as soon as possible” states reward early filers.

How to apply for MAP

  1. File the 2027-28 FAFSA. “Illinois residents apply for the MAP grant by submitting a FAFSA every year,” according to Loyola. Our FAFSA walkthrough covers each section.
  2. List at least one approved Illinois college on the form.
  3. Use the Alternative Application instead if you cannot file the FAFSA. It is on the ISAC website. Eligibility rules for students using it can change, so confirm your status with your college for 2027-28.
  4. Fix errors quickly. A correction can delay your record, and in Illinois a delay can cost you the award.
  5. Check your aid offer for a MAP estimate, and ask the aid office if it is listed as suspended.

The 135-hour limit

MAP is not unlimited. Once you have used the equivalent of 135 MAP Paid Credit Hours, you are no longer eligible, according to UIC. Students who change majors several times or attend part time for many years can run out of eligibility before finishing a degree, so it helps to plan a direct route to graduation.

A MAP checklist for 2027-28

  • File the FAFSA or Alternative Application this fall, not next spring
  • Confirm your SAI is at or below the year’s MAP limit
  • Plan to enroll in at least 3 credit hours (and 15 for the full award)
  • Keep satisfactory academic progress
  • Track your MAP Paid Credit Hours over your college years
  • Refile every year; MAP does not renew automatically

Your 2027-28 timeline

The 2027-28 FAFSA has been open since September 23, 2026. Here is how the rest of the year lines up, using the dates the sources in this guide publish:

  • Now: file the FAFSA or Alternative Application.
  • Winter 2027: check your FAFSA Submission Summary and fix errors.
  • Spring 2027: watch for ISAC’s suspension date, which was April 23 in the 2026-27 cycle.
  • Before you enroll: confirm your MAP estimate on your college aid offer.

Common questions

Can I get MAP at a community college?

Yes. MAP can be used at approved Illinois colleges, including community colleges, as long as you enroll in at least 3 credit hours per term in a degree or certificate program, according to UIC. The award is limited by that college’s tuition and fees, so it is usually smaller at a lower-cost school.

Does MAP depend on my grades?

No. UIC says eligibility “is based on financial need, not high school grades or test scores.” Once in college, you do need to maintain satisfactory academic progress to keep receiving it.

What if my award shows as suspended?

A suspended announcement means ISAC has not committed funds to you yet. Stay in contact with your college’s aid office, keep your FAFSA record correct, and look for other grants in case MAP funding does not reach your application.

Does MAP cover living costs?

MAP is capped by ISAC’s tuition and fee limit for your college, according to UIC, so plan to pay for housing, food and books from other sources.

How MAP fits with other aid

MAP stacks with the federal Pell Grant and with college scholarships. Many colleges also offer their own grants, so read each school’s financial aid page. For the rest of the gap, look for local scholarships through your counselor or a community foundation, or use our free scholarship finder. Our guide to state grants for college compares Illinois with states that guarantee awards.

In 2026, the cutoff came in late April. Filing your 2027-28 FAFSA in November or December puts you well ahead of any date ISAC is likely to set.
