Maine State Grant: 2026-27 Amounts and Deadline

Maine college grants come mainly from the Maine State Grant Program, a need-based grant run by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). For the 2026-27 academic year, FAME says the maximum is $2,500 for full-time students and up to $1,250 for students enrolled at least half time, with a Student Aid Index (SAI) limit of 10,000. The FAFSA is the only application. Maine also offers free community college tuition for recent high school graduates who file the FAFSA.

Maine State Grant amounts for 2026-27

FAME’s program page states: “For the 2026-27 academic year, the maximum grant amount for the Maine State Grant Program is $2,500” (FAME, Maine State Grant Program).

2026-27 Maine State Grant FAME figure
Full-time maximum $2,500
Less than full time but at least half time Up to $1,250
Maximum SAI 10,000
FAFSA deadline stated by FAME November 13, 2026
Application FAFSA only, every year

FAME notes that the SAI limit depends on available funding and may change. It has not published 2027-28 figures on the page we read, so treat these as the current year’s numbers, not a forecast.

That November 13 date

FAME’s page says “The FAFSA deadline for the 2026–27 academic year is November 13, 2026.” That is unusually late in the school year, and it means a current student who has not yet filed the 2026-27 FAFSA may still be considered for this year’s grant. If that is you, file the 2026-27 FAFSA now, before November 13, 2026, and then file the 2027-28 FAFSA for next year.

Who is eligible for the Maine State Grant

FAME describes the grant as need-based for Maine residents. The key conditions on its page:

  • Your SAI must be at or below the year’s limit (10,000 for 2026-27).
  • You must enroll at least half time to receive an award.
  • You generally must attend school in Maine. Maine residents at schools outside Maine are generally not eligible, with one exception: students in NEBHE’s Tuition Break Program (the New England Regional Student Program) may qualify.
  • You must file the FAFSA each year you plan to attend.

Because the SAI is the gate, the most useful thing you can do before filing is estimate yours. Our guide on how to fill out the FAFSA explains which answers drive the SAI and how to avoid errors that inflate it.

Free community college in Maine

FAME’s site says: “If you’re a Maine student who earned (or will earn) a high school diploma or equivalent in 2022, 2023, 2024 or 2025, you can attend Maine community college tuition free, but you’ll need to file the FAFSA first.” That page, read in November 2026, lists those four graduating classes; it does not say whether the class of 2026 or 2027 is included. If you graduate in a later year, check FAME’s Free Community College page and ask your community college directly before you count on it.

The free community college program and the Maine State Grant both run off the FAFSA, which is one more reason every Maine student heading to a community college should file it.

How to apply

  1. File the FAFSA for the year you will attend. For fall 2027, that is the 2027-28 FAFSA, open now.
  2. List the Maine colleges you are considering. FAME uses the FAFSA as the only Maine State Grant application.
  3. Watch FAME’s page for the 2027-28 deadline and SAI limit, and for your college’s own priority date, which may be earlier. Our FAFSA deadlines guide explains how state and college dates interact.
  4. File again every year. The grant does not renew without a new FAFSA.

Your Maine aid checklist

  • Current students: if you have not filed the 2026-27 FAFSA, do it before November 13, 2026.
  • Seniors: file the 2027-28 FAFSA as early as you can.
  • Estimate your SAI and compare it with FAME’s limit.
  • Plan to enroll at least half time; full time doubles the maximum.
  • If you are thinking about an out-of-state New England college, ask whether your program is in NEBHE’s Tuition Break Program.
  • Check your college’s own scholarship deadlines.

How Maine aid fits with federal aid

The Maine State Grant is packaged with the Federal Pell Grant, and both come from the same FAFSA. For award years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, a student whose non-federal aid equals or exceeds the cost of attendance is not eligible for Pell, according to a June 4, 2026 Federal Student Aid electronic announcement. Cost of attendance includes housing, food and books, so a $2,500 state grant is very unlikely to trigger it on its own.

Questions Maine families ask

Is the Maine State Grant the same every year?

No. FAME sets the maximum and the SAI limit for each academic year based on funding. Check FAME’s page every year.

My income dropped after the tax year on the FAFSA. What can I do?

Ask your college’s financial aid office about a professional judgment review, with documents showing the change. The office can adjust the data used for your aid, which may lower your SAI, but it is not required to.

Can graduate students get the Maine State Grant?

FAME describes the program as aid for undergraduate study. Graduate students should look at federal aid and their program’s own funding.

Can I get the grant if I attend part time?

Yes, if you enroll at least half time. FAME lists up to $1,250 for 2026-27 for students below full time but at least half time. Below half time, you would not receive the grant.
