North Carolina College Grants: Next NC Scholarship Guide for 2027-28

North Carolina college grants are packaged for most students through the Next NC Scholarship, which combines the federal Pell Grant with state aid into one award. If your household’s adjusted gross income (AGI) is $80,000 or less and your Student Aid Index (SAI) is 7,500 or less, it provides at least $3,000 for full-time study at a North Carolina community college or at least $5,000 at a UNC System university. There is no separate application: the FAFSA is the application, with a June 1 priority date.

The state’s grants are administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA), and the program details are published on CFNC, the state’s college planning site. NCSEAA’s own site blocked automated requests when this guide was checked, so the figures below come from CFNC. The federal 2027-28 FAFSA opened on September 23, 2026, according to CNBC.

What “at least $3,000” and “at least $5,000” mean

The Next NC Scholarship is a guarantee about the total, not a separate check. It “combines the Federal Pell Grant with state aid into one easy to understand award,” according to CFNC. If your Pell Grant alone is large, the state adds less; if your Pell is small, the state adds more to reach the floor. CFNC lists the amount as “Amount Varies” and a “Guaranteed Amount Between Federal and State Funds.”

CFNC also says that “students with the greatest need for financial aid could qualify for even more funding,” and that differences in offers between colleges “are based on differences in the tuition and required fees that are charged at each institution.” CFNC offers a tool to view your estimated Next NC funding for the 2026-27 academic year.

Who qualifies

CFNC lists these requirements beyond the income and SAI limits:

  • Be a North Carolina resident as defined by the North Carolina Residency Manual
  • Enroll for at least 6 credit hours
  • Be admitted, enrolled and classified as an undergraduate in a degree, certificate or diploma program at one of the 16 UNC institutions or a North Carolina community college

Residency is decided under the North Carolina Residency Manual, and CFNC offers an online NC Residency Determination request. Complete it when you apply to college so your residency is settled before aid is packaged.

How to apply: just the FAFSA

You do not fill out a separate Next NC application. CFNC says the award is based on “a Student Aid Index (SAI) of 7,500 or less per the FAFSA,” so filing the FAFSA puts you in consideration.

  1. File the 2027-28 FAFSA and list every North Carolina college you are considering. Our FAFSA walkthrough covers each section.
  2. Complete your North Carolina residency determination through CFNC.
  3. Aim for the June 1 priority date, and check each college’s own priority date, which may be earlier.
  4. Read your aid offers. Each college will show your Pell and state aid together.

CFNC lists the deadline as rolling, with June 1 as the priority date. It also notes that “colleges may set different priority dates to assist in awarding of financial aid other than the Next NC Scholarship,” and urges students to “file your FAFSA even if the priority date for your college and/or the Next NC Scholarship priority date has passed as some funding, including Federal grants and loans, will still be available.” Our FAFSA deadlines guide explains how priority dates work.

Your 2027-28 timeline

The 2027-28 FAFSA has been open since September 23, 2026. Here is how the rest of the year lines up, using the dates the sources in this guide publish:

  • Now: file the FAFSA and request your NC residency determination.
  • Winter and spring 2027: meet each college’s own priority date.
  • June 1, 2027: the Next NC priority date.
  • After June 1: file anyway; CFNC says some funding will still be available.

Common questions

Do I need good grades for Next NC?

No. The eligibility tests CFNC lists are income, SAI, residency, enrollment and admission to an eligible program. Once enrolled, colleges apply their own satisfactory academic progress rules to all aid.

Is Next NC only for new high school graduates?

The requirements CFNC lists do not include an age or graduation-year limit. Any North Carolina resident undergraduate who meets the income, SAI and enrollment rules at a UNC System university or community college can qualify.

What if my income is just over $80,000?

You will not qualify for the Next NC guarantee, but you can still receive federal aid and other state or college aid based on your FAFSA. File anyway, and ask each college what aid it offers families just above the limit.

Can part-time students qualify?

Yes, with at least 6 credit hours, according to CFNC. The guaranteed minimums of $3,000 and $5,000 are for full-time enrollment, so part-time awards will be smaller.

A Next NC checklist for 2027-28

  • Confirm your household AGI is $80,000 or less on the tax year your FAFSA uses
  • Check your SAI on your FAFSA Submission Summary (7,500 or less)
  • Complete the NC residency determination
  • Plan to enroll in at least 6 credit hours, and full time for the guaranteed minimums
  • File before June 1, 2027, and earlier for college priority dates
  • File again every year

Private colleges and other students

The Next NC Scholarship is limited to the UNC System and the community colleges. Students at private North Carolina colleges, and students whose income is above the Next NC limits, may still receive other state, federal or college aid through their FAFSA. Ask the financial aid office at each private college which state programs its students receive.

How Next NC fits with other aid

Because Next NC is built on top of the federal Pell Grant, your Pell eligibility shapes how the award is split between federal and state money. College scholarships and outside awards can cover the remaining costs, such as housing and books; our free scholarship finder is one place to search. For a wider view, see our guide to state grants for college.

For a North Carolina family under $80,000 AGI, the practical step is simple: file the 2027-28 FAFSA and finish the residency determination before June 1, 2027. Those two forms are all the Next NC Scholarship requires of you.
