Idaho college grants and scholarships come mainly through two state programs: the Idaho Opportunity Scholarship, run by the Idaho State Board of Education, and Idaho LAUNCH, a grant for recent high school graduates that pays toward approved training and college programs. Both use one application, Scholarship Idaho, which opens October 1 each year. The dates to know are November 30 (LAUNCH priority), March 1 (FAFSA for scholarships that require it) and April 15 (LAUNCH close).
Idaho LAUNCH: up to $8,000 for recent graduates
The state’s Next Steps Idaho site says “Idaho LAUNCH gives you up to $8,000 for what’s next after high school” (Next Steps Idaho, Idaho LAUNCH). The grant covers 80% of tuition and fees, and students can receive up to half of it, $4,000, in the first year of a program. The page, read in November 2026, does not tie those figures to a named award year, so confirm the current cycle with the program team before you budget.
Who is eligible for LAUNCH
Next Steps Idaho lists these requirements:
- You are in the current high school graduating class from an Idaho school, which includes public, charter, private, home school and GED programs.
- You are under 21 by April 15.
- You are an Idaho resident.
- You enroll in or apply to an eligible Idaho institution and an approved LAUNCH program, which can be trade, technical, two-year or four-year.
- You begin by the fall semester after graduation.
- You complete a Career Pathway Plan, due May 31.
If you are not a high school senior, the state points adults to a separate program, Idaho LAUNCH for Adults.
LAUNCH dates
| Step | Date (per Next Steps Idaho) |
|---|---|
| Application opens | October 1 |
| Priority deadline (funds are limited) | November 30 |
| Application closes | April 15 |
| Career Pathway Plan due | May 31 |
| Accept a contingent offer | Within two weeks of the offer |
For a senior graduating in spring 2027, that makes November 30, 2026 the date that matters most. Funding is limited, and the state says so plainly.
The Idaho Opportunity Scholarship
The Idaho Opportunity Scholarship is the state’s main need-and-merit scholarship for undergraduates. The Next Steps Idaho scholarship page sets out what we could confirm (Next Steps Idaho, Scholarship Idaho):
- You must have graduated from an accredited Idaho high school, homeschool or its equivalent.
- The FAFSA deadline is March 1, and “Applications with late FAFSAs cannot be considered.”
- The GPA requirement “is set in the Administrative Code,” and exceptions cannot be made.
The state’s application guide adds that “only undergraduate students are eligible,” that contingent awards are emailed in December and March, and that final offers go out in late April or early May (Next Steps Idaho, Scholarship Application Guide). It also says the GPA used is the one you have as of the application deadline.
We could not find a current maximum award amount or award year for the Idaho Opportunity Scholarship on the state pages we read, so we have not given one. When you apply, the scholarship’s own listing in Scholarship Idaho is the place to check the amount.

How Idaho aid fits with federal aid
The FAFSA also decides your eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant, which does not run out at your college. One federal change to know: for award years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, a student whose non-federal aid equals or exceeds the cost of attendance is not eligible for Pell, according to a June 4, 2026 Federal Student Aid electronic announcement. Because LAUNCH pays only part of tuition and fees, and cost of attendance includes housing and food, most students will not come close.
Questions Idaho families ask
Can I use LAUNCH at a four-year university?
Next Steps Idaho lists four-year options among approved LAUNCH programs, alongside trade, technical and two-year programs. Check that your specific program and provider are on the approved list.
I missed November 30. Should I still apply for LAUNCH?
Yes. Applications stay open until April 15, but the state says funds are limited, so later applicants risk the money being gone.
Who answers LAUNCH questions?
The state lists [email protected] and 208-488-7575.
Does LAUNCH pay for living costs?
Next Steps Idaho describes LAUNCH as covering 80% of tuition and fees. Plan for housing, food, books and transportation from other aid, savings or work, and ask your college how it packages LAUNCH with your other aid.
