Iowa college grants are run by the Iowa Department of Education’s state financial aid team (formerly Iowa College Aid), and the main ones are the Iowa Tuition Grant for students at Iowa private colleges, the Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship for high-demand programs, and the Iowa Vocational-Technical Tuition Grant for community college career programs. All three use the FAFSA as the application. For the 2027-28 year, the Iowa Tuition Grant’s FAFSA deadline is July 1, 2027.
Iowa Tuition Grant
The state says Iowa Tuition Grants “are awarded to Iowa residents enrolled at one of Iowa’s eligible private colleges and universities” (Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Tuition Grant). To qualify you must:
- Be an Iowa resident.
- Be an undergraduate in an associate or bachelor’s degree program.
- Enroll at an eligible Iowa private college or university.
- Submit the FAFSA by July 1, 2027 for the 2027-28 year.
- Have a calculated, eligible Student Aid Index (SAI) on the FAFSA; it cannot be blank.
Iowa Tuition Grant amounts and SAI range
The state has not yet set 2027-28 figures. It gives 2026-27 for reference:
| Item | 2026-27 (reference) | 2027-28 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum award at Iowa not-for-profit private institutions | $7,500 | Not yet determined |
| Eligible SAI range | -1,500 to 16,000 | Not yet determined |
The statutory maximum is set at the average Regent university tuition and fee rate, but the state says the actual maximum “may be less depending on the funding available and number of projected recipients.” Recipients can receive the grant for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study, and part-time students may receive adjusted amounts.
Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship
The Last-Dollar Scholarship “is intended to cover any remaining gap between federal and state grants/scholarships and tuition and qualified fees” for certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in high-demand fields (Iowa Department of Education, Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship).
The state lists these eligibility rules:
- You recently completed an Iowa high school diploma, a homeschool program or a high school equivalency diploma, or you are age 20 or older.
- You enroll at least part time in an eligible program of study.
- You are an Iowa resident.
- You apply for all other available state and federal grants and scholarships.
- You have an SAI at or below 30,000.
- You meet the ongoing requirements.
Eligible schools are Iowa community colleges and accredited private colleges in Iowa that offer qualified programs and agree to provide orientation and advising. The list of eligible programs is based on job demand and “might change from year to year,” but a student whose program is removed stays eligible until finishing, as long as all other rules are met.
To keep the award, the state says you must remain an Iowa resident, attend orientation, register with an advisor’s help and take part in academic advising, plus career advising if your program requires it. The state’s page lists June 30, 2027 as the FAFSA deadline for the 2026-27 school year for this program; check it again for the 2027-28 date.

How Iowa aid fits with federal aid
Last-Dollar is calculated after federal grants, so the Federal Pell Grant comes first. One federal change: for award years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, a student whose non-federal aid equals or exceeds the cost of attendance is not eligible for Pell, according to a June 4, 2026 Federal Student Aid electronic announcement. Cost of attendance includes housing and food, so few Iowa grant recipients are affected.
Questions Iowa families ask
Can I use the Iowa Tuition Grant at a public university?

Who do I contact?
The State Financial Aid Programs Team is at 877-272-4456, option 3.
Is the Iowa Tuition Grant amount guaranteed?
No. The state says the actual maximum may be lower than the statutory maximum depending on funding and the number of recipients, and 2027-28 figures have not been set. Wait for your college’s aid offer for the real number.
